What you need to know before starting a daily skincare routine
Whether your skin is oily, dry, or acne-prone, you need to have a skin regimen that works best for you. Without cleansing and taking care of your skin each day, you leave it susceptible to becoming dull, damaged, and more prone to breakouts.
Each skin regimen should be personalized due to different types of healthy skin, but here are the basics you need to know when creating your own routine.
Cleanser
Start your skin regimen off on the right foot with a refreshing and cleansing face wash that leaves your skin feeling soft and clean. In the morning, clean off all the dirt and oil you accumulated in your sleep by opting for a gentle, alcohol-free cleanser. Alcohol is a drying agent and can strip your skin of natural oils.
If you suffer from oily skin, it can be tempting to choose a cleanser that isn’t water-based, but by doing so, you’re not doing your skin any favors. When you dry your skin out with a non-water-based cleanser, your body will produce even more oil compensate for the moisture it has lost.
Toner & Moisturizer
Next, it’s time to tone the pH levels of your skin. Your skin’s pH levels can become imbalanced when you wash your face with a cleansing product, so take a few drops of your favorite toner and lightly dab them into your face with your fingers.
Make sure to find a toner that works for your skin type. If you have acne-prone skin, find a medicated one with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. If you’re on the drier side of the spectrum, opt for a hydrating toner. Ingredients like witch hazel, vitamin E or avocado oil are good to keep an eye out for when looking for a good hydrating toner.
Moisturizer is the final step in your new daily skin regimen. Moisturizer, like toners and cleansers, should be customized to each type of skin. If you have oily skin check out a moisturizer without oil. These will leave your skin hydrated, but not shiny.
Add a sunscreen to your moisturizer or find one with at least an SPF 30 in it. Even on overcast days, the sun’s rays will reach your skin and do damage to it. Avoid premature aging by wearing your SPF each day.
