Dawn Career Institute is a private post-secondary institution of higher education serving Delaware, south-central and south-eastern Pennsylvania, and northern Maryland.
Our History
The institute offers both campus-based and online career-focused diploma programs, leading to professional certifications and licenses in a variety of healthcare, trades, and wellness fields. DCI was established in 1976 as Dawn Aeronautics. This full-service aviation center provided aircraft sales, maintenance, charters and international flight training. In 1993 the school changed its focus to the health and wellness fields, and the institute’s name was changed to Dawn Training Institute, located in New Castle, DE. The first program was Health Insurance Claims Examiner, followed by Medical Billing/Health Claim Specialist and Therapeutic Massage Practitioner in 1997, and Medical Administrative Specialist in 1999.
The school had two prior locations in Wilmington, DE, at 2400 West Fourth Street from 1995-2001, and at 3700 Lancaster Pike from 2001-2003. Due to strong market demands, the allied health & wellness curriculum was expanded to include the Medical Assisting program in 2002, followed shortly by the Advanced Esthetician program in 2003 and the Dental Assistant program in 2007. In October 2009, Dawn Training Center became Dawn Career Institute, Inc. and online education was added to the successful campus-based program offerings, providing students with even greater flexibility to achieve their career goals. The Heath Information Technician program was approved in 2014, and was renamed as Medical Billing and Coding Specialist in December 2016.
On November 4, 2015, Dawn Career Institute, LLC (d/b/a Dawn Career Institute) purchased the assets of Dawn Career Institute, Inc. Dawn Career Institute, LLC is owned by Education Evolve, LLC.
The campus moved to its current location at 252 Chapman Road, Newark, DE on December 22, 2017. This 25,047 square foot facility provides updated classroom and lab spaces, as well as a brand-new computer lab, and dedicated areas for the Learning Resource Center and Career Services Department as a center hub of the campus. The facility also includes New Beginnings Spa, a full-service day spa offering professional massage services, as well as trained student and professional skin care services, body treatments, and makeup/lash extension services.
In February 2019, two new commercial driving programs were approved: a 5-week Class A CDL Preparatory program preparing students for Class A CDL certification and an 18-week Advanced Class A CDL Driving program providing additional in-depth training on vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting, effective trip planning, managing hours of service, as well as additional training on the range and road. The campus also added a 36-week HVAC Technician program.
In August 2023, the campus added a 60-hour Class B CDL Driving program preparing students for Class B CDL certification.
In January 2024, the school received approval from the Delaware Board of Nursing to offer a 48-week Practical Nurse program. Effective January 10, 2024, this nursing program is a candidate for initial accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. This candidacy status expires on January 10, 2026. DCI is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC). It is approved by the State of Delaware Department of Education as a Private Business and Trade School and for Veteran’s (VA) training. The Institution is also approved by the U.S. Department of Education to administer Title IV Pell Grants, Direct Student Loans (DSL), and Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS).
DCI has grown significantly from its aviation beginning 40 years ago, and now serves a growing population of students across 4 diploma programs and 3 short-term certification programs.
