5 Winter Skincare Tips You Can Start Using Today

Keep your skin healthy all winter long

With frigid temperatures and drier air, winter can be a damaging time of year for your skin. A proper winter skincare routine can go a long way to preventing dry skin symptoms like cracking and bleeding.

Our student spa clinic, New Beginnings Spa, shared these tips to avoid the “winter itch” of flaky dry skin and maintain a healthy and glowing winter skincare routine.

1. Add moisture to your environment

Your skin is the barrier that keeps water inside of your body. When the surrounding air is dry and cold, it saps moisture from your skin and causes typical winter skin problems like dryness, dullness and flaking. Over a prolonged period of time, this can even cause accelerated aging. Using a humidifier can help to avoid these problems by adding moisture to the air you breathe.

2. Lukewarm water is key

When it’s cold outside, the most comforting feeling can be showering or washing in hot water. However, heat from the water dries out your skin and can strip the skin of necessary oils, leading to cracking and flaking. Opt for lukewarm water when you shower and wash your hands.

3. Keep your moisturizer nearby

Do you often forget to moisturize after washing your hands or body? Keep this step top of mind by keeping an oil-based moisturizer by your sink and bathtub. During the winter months, moisturizer is most effective while the skin is still damp. Your skin’s hydration boost from your shower only lasts about three minutes, so don’t hesitate!

4. Pat your skin dry

It is important to be gentle on your skin during the dry winter months. When you’re drying your body after a shower or bath, avoid rubbing your skin completely dry. Rather, pat your skin. A gentle touch allows for more moisture to be absorbed.

5. Change your diet

Teas, hot cocoas, and coffees may warm you up during the frigid winter days, but they absorb water from our bodies at a much faster rate than other beverages. Drinking water can keep your skin hydrated and glowing throughout the winter, while also ridding your body of toxins that cause skin breakouts. Add carrots, sweet potatoes, or extra virgin olive oil to your diet to moisturize and add collagen to your skin.
