For many people, a career in healthcare begins with a simple desire: to help others. For students in the Nursing Assistant program at Dawn Career Institute, that desire is transformed into practical skills, professional confidence, and real career opportunities through hands-on training and for some, through a unique partnership with ChristianaCare.
Nursing assistants play a critical role in patient care every single day. They assist patients with daily living tasks, monitor vital signs, provide emotional support, and often become a comforting presence for individuals during some of life’s most challenging moments. In hospitals, rehabilitation centers, long-term care facilities, and other healthcare settings, compassionate nursing assistants are essential members of the healthcare team.
At Dawn Career Institute, students can prepare for this rewarding career path in just six weeks.
A Fast Track into Healthcare
The Nursing Assistant program at Dawn Career Institute is designed to help students quickly gain the skills and confidence needed to enter the healthcare field. Students receive instruction from experienced Registered Nurses while training with medical equipment and tools similar to what they will encounter on the job.
Students learn the day-to-day responsibilities nursing assistants perform, including:
- Taking medical histories and recording vital signs
- Assisting patients with meals and personal care
- Helping patients dress and reposition safely
- Recording patient concerns and observations
- Providing emotional support and companionship
Professional development training is also integrated into the curriculum, including:
- Resume writing
- Interview preparation
- Goal setting
- Customer relations
- Stress management
- Professional communication
For many students, the program becomes more than career training—it becomes a turning point.
A Partnership Creating Real Opportunities
Dawn Career Institute’s partnership with ChristianaCare helps bridge the gap between education and employment.
As the largest healthcare system in Northern Delaware, ChristianaCare partners with Dawn Career Institute to help train future healthcare professionals through scholarship-supported educational opportunities. Selected ChristianaCare employees receive funding assistance to complete hands-on healthcare training at Dawn Career Institute before transitioning into new roles within the ChristianaCare system.
The partnership not only helps strengthen the healthcare workforce, but also creates accessible career pathways for individuals looking for a fresh start, a meaningful profession, or an opportunity to grow within healthcare.
For students like Trinity Cologne, the experience helped confirm a passion she never expected to discover.
“Being a CNA was something I would have never thought of a few years ago,” Trinity shared. “The more closely I worked with CNAs, PCTs, and the nurses made me kind of fall in love with being in a hospital setting.”
Today, Trinity works as a Patient Care Technician on a surgical transition floor at ChristianaCare.
She credits Dawn Career Institute’s supportive environment with helping her succeed.
“My experience at Dawn was actually way better than I thought it would be,” she said. “My instructor was great… and my nursing residency manager was also great. It was very supportive.”
Most importantly, Trinity says the program prepared her for the realities of patient care.
“My favorite thing about being a CNA is when I get patients saying thank you,” she explained. “That makes me feel so good because it’s like, at least what I’m doing is actually working and my passion is showing.”
More Than a Classroom Experience
Graduates have described the Nursing Assistant program as a welcoming and encouraging environment where students are supported not only academically, but personally as well.
Kemani Hill, now a Patient Care Technician at ChristianaCare, said the experience helped her finally find a career that felt right.
“I’ve done food, retail, office jobs, and it just never fit,” Kemani said. “When I was able to get back through the partnership that Dawn and Christiana have, I feel like everybody should get to experience it.”
Kemani especially appreciated the sense of community within the classroom.
“It wasn’t just straight ‘do your work and get out,’” she shared. “You can relax, you can be a person here.”
Today, she says caring for patients gives her a strong sense of purpose.
“I’ve had patients tell me, ‘I wanted to get better because of you,’” Kemani recalled. “Okay, my little influence.”
For Tasha, another graduate now working at Christiana Hospital, entering healthcare was completely unexpected.
“In a million years, you would never tell me that I would be in healthcare.”
After encouragement from her daughter, Tasha enrolled in the program and quickly found herself impressed by the learning environment and structure at Dawn Career Institute.
“When I walked inside, it felt like a mini college campus,” she explained. “The class was very structured… it was a wonderful experience.”
A Career That Makes a Difference
Healthcare careers are just as much about human connection as technical skills. Nursing assistants frequently become the people patients remember most because of the comfort, encouragement, and compassion they provide during difficult times.
For students considering a future in healthcare, the Nursing Assistant program at Dawn Career Institute offers an opportunity to enter the field quickly while building the skills employers value most.
Whether you are beginning your first career, changing directions professionally, or looking for a way to make a positive impact in people’s lives, becoming a nursing assistant can be the first step toward a rewarding future in healthcare.
