What Experienced Commercial Drivers Want New Drivers to Know

Tips for Getting Started as a Commercial Driver

When it comes to driving a large vehicle like a tractor-trailer, not just anybody can get behind the wheel and go. These drivers must possess a commercial driver’s license. Also known as a CDL, a commercial driver’s license assures that a driver has the necessary qualifications to operate a vehicle of a specific weight or one that is used for shipping and transportation.

Aside from possessing the necessary qualifications to obtain a license, commercial drivers must be knowledgeable in the field of driving and trucking itself. An understanding of logistics, accident procedures and maneuvering through various conditions and terrains are important elements in a driver’s skill set.

Read on to learn the key components of truck driving that veteran commercial drivers want new drivers to know.

Owner-Operator vs. Lease Driving

In the trucking industry, commercial drivers may fall into two categories: an owner-operator or lease driver.

Owner-operator drivers outright own their truck and have the option to work with one specific company or a variety of companies. This allows drivers the option to function as a freelance truck driver while also receiving steady work from one company. When picking up work by their own accord, it is the driver who is responsible for finding freight, negotiating rates and filing the necessary paperwork.

Lease driving refers to a driver who works with one carrier and may own or lease their truck. Similar to renting a car, lease drivers work through a third party with the option to purchase the truck at the end of the lease. The company a driver works for in this instance performs services like:

  • Finding and allocating freight for the driver to haul
  • Filing paperwork
  • Handling fuel expenses
  • Providing maintenance to the vehicle when needed

At Dawn Career Institute, we know how important it is to provide our students with hands-on training and real-world experience to help them achieve their career goals. In our 18-week Advanced Class A CDL Driving and 4-week Class A CDL Driving programs, qualified CDL instructors provide our students with the classroom, range, and on-the-road training required to obtain their commercial driver’s license.

Prior to stepping into a truck, students enrolled in the Advanced Class A CDL Driving or Class A CDL Driving programs will learn the importance of personal safety for themselves and other commercial drivers, accident procedures, driver dispatch and environmental compliance issues.

During this time, students are preparing to take the written portion of the CDL test, which is required to obtain a CDL Learner’s Permit.

Next, students will have the opportunity to practice on our driving range. Here, they can gain experience in straight line backing, parallel parking, and 45 degree alley docks.
